Qld Tour Day 4 - Lismore & Surfers Paradise

Friday 29th August 2003

(By Chris Gardiner - guitar/vocals 4 Scrum)

I awoke in Lismore still in my clothes and hung over as hell. Tales of a drunken mess of a night were relayed to me as I tried to sum up the courage to look at sunlight again. As for the tales I was told, lets just say what happens on the road, stays on the road.

A unanimous decision was made to find get out of the rooms as soon as possible and load up and find the nearest Maccas for brekkie. Driving round in circles like the tourists we were got us no closer to our beloved bacon and egg mc muffins so we strapped ourselves in for the hungry ride to Ballina and to a good old fashioned big breakfast at the big prawn.

 On to Surfers Paradise.

We rolled into Surfers around 12 noon but couldn't book into the hotel until 1pm. After parking the vans we went for a stroll to find the venue. Out the front of the Troccadero in huge movie-like lettering was: "Fri 29 D-Nine - Scrum". Awesome. While Hill and I checked out the fucking monster that is the beach, the others found themselves hooking into a pint already.

1pm rolled around and we all met up back at the hotel and after checking in it was off to the spa. Thats right girls, half naked with Trav and Ben in the one spa. Heavenly! A little too heavenly actually. So relaxing was it , that it tired me out for the rest of the day! Time to find some lunch. Around 3.30pm our keen eyes spotted the brewery/restaurant next door and just had to try it. Only problem was it was closed. We wandered around for about 15 mins bouncing from one establishment to the next being told time after time that we'd missed lunch and were too early for dinner! Accepted finally (and only just) into the surf club we sat for a while and most of us enjoyed the cheap fish & chips and more pints.

Then we were determined to do some browsing about. We got about half way down one street, saw a sign that caught our attention: "$2.50 Pints" all day until 6pm. Well, needless to say that's as far as we got.

A lazy afternoon to be sure. After loading all the gear into the venue around 5pm, we made the horrible discovery that both Russell's guitars were missing! After an hour of accusations and frantic phone calls, it turns out we left them behind in Lismore and the boys from Schesjuan were gunna take them to Brissie for us the next day. Phew! The venue had to be shut for a while. With our gear safely locked up, we made our way to The Beer Garden for a few more pints. And then the gig.

The memory card that took a lot of the pics from that day was a casualty of war.
